Health Information Exchange

is the secure electronic sharing of patient information. This sharing may be done by hospitals, labs and provider practices as well as other organizations and agencies. In this sense, health information exchange is a verb, something that is done with health information. Health information exchange is also a noun − a community-based entity – a health information exchange or HIE that connects the electronic health record systems of providers, clinicians and others, facilitating secure information sharing and patient care coordination in a community, region or state. HIEs allow HIE participants to connect electronically to both provide data (as a data supplier) or access data (as a data user).
